10 now dead in massive Northern California wildfire

Authorities said Thursday that at least 10 people have died in a massive Northern California wildfire and 16 people remain missing.​​​Butte County sheriff’s deputies and detectives found seven bodies on Thursday, a day after three other victims were discovered. Among those unaccounted for are grandparents who told their son they were going to try to escape the flames by finding shelter in a pond.

New US sanctions on international tribunal prosecutor, aide

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the moves as part of the administration’s pushback against the tribunal, based in The Hague, for investigations into the United States and its allies. The sanctions include a freeze on assets held in the US or subject to US law and target prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and the court’s head of jurisdiction, Phakiso Mochochoko.

The hajj pilgrimage has also been drastically impacted by the virus. Last year, some 2.5 million pilgrims took part, but this year it was limited to as few as 1,000 already residing in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Health Ministry said there have been no cases of the Covid-19 illness among this year’s pilgrims. Government precautions included testing pilgrims for the virus, monitoring their movement with electronic wristbands and requiring them to quarantine before and after.

WHO reports largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases

The World Health Organization on Sunday reported the largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases by its count, at more than 183,000 new cases in the latest 24 hours. Brazil led the way with 54,771 cases tallied and the US next at 36,617. Over 15,400 came in India. Experts said rising case counts can reflect multiple factors including more widespread testing.

Austria to redesign Hitler’s birthplace as police station

Austrian authorities have presented the winning plan to redesign the house where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889, turning it into a police station and trying to make it unattractive as a pilgrimage site for people who glorify the Nazi dictator.​​A design by Austrian architects Marte.Marte beat 11 competitors in an interior ministry tender, officials announced Tuesday. The refurbishment is expected to be complete around the end of 2022 and will cost around 5 million euros ($5.6 million).

Coronavirus: Saudi Arabia eases curfew restrictions for month of Ramadan

RIYADH (REUTERS) – Saudi Arabia plans to ease curfew hours it imposed on several cities during the month of Ramadan to allow people more time to shop for essential needs within the boundaries of their neighbourhoods, state news agency SPA reported on Tuesday (April 21).
Currently, people living in areas under 24-hour curfew can go out for healthcare purposes and to supermarkets from 6am to 3pm.
During Ramadan, these hours will start from 9am until 5pm, SPA said.
