Portland Thorns players have begun taping over a team sponsor’s logo on the warmup gear they wear before matches.

The controversial sponsor, Social CBD, had been affiliated with the Thorns since 2019. Its logo normally appears on the jerseys players wear before games but was obscured by a line of white tape before Wednesday night’s draw with OL Reign. At least some Portland players had taped over the logo at a match last week, too.

“The main reason for doing it is they aren’t our sponsor anymore and they shouldn’t be on the front of our shirts, so we taped it out,” Thorns star forward Christine Sinclair explained after Wednesday’s match. She then added, “we watch the news,” which may have been a nod to Social CBD’s troubled record.

The Social CBD brand was owned by Sentia Wellness, which had been plagued by layoffs, lawsuits and Sentia’s ties to scandal-plagued Portland marijuana company Cura…
