PEABODY, MA — Peabody police are telling residents not to respond to emails that appear to be from Amazon Prime telling them to update their payment information.
“If you get this email ignore it,” police said on Wednesday. “It is fraud attempting to get your credit card information. It is not from Amazon.”
The email in question includes the statement: “ALERT: We cannot update your card because your card is no longer active.”

The email or text is part of a scam called “phishing” in which people receive communication from what appears to be a reputable company, but is actually coming from a third party looking to steal credit card and personal identification information. These emails may include a link that when clicked on installs spyware or a virus on a computer or phone.
