KOCHI: Ernakulam Rural police on Thursday issued an advisory urging the public to be wary of strangers offering investments through the social media during the lockdown. Police said that instances have come to their attention where fraudsters who make friendships online have offered to make investments and later cheated people of huge sums of money.
Rural police said that the fraudsters have duped around Rs 1.5 crore from various persons in the district through these modus operandi. The accused start off by befriending the victim online and then learning about the persons through social media. The scamsters introduce themselves as either an NRI or a foreigner. Once it becomes sure to them that a bond has been made, the fraudsters then offer to make an investment in a joint venture, police said.
