In April, Indian law firm Khaitan & Co set up a new office—its sixth—in Singapore to practice foreign law. With over 700 fee-earners, Khaitan is one of the largest law firms in India and has been active in cross-border matters. The firm traces its roots back to 1911, but this is its first foreign office.

Another large Indian firm, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, also opened in Singapore this year and is applying for a practice license now. Cyril Amarchand has 750 lawyers; until now, neither it nor its predecessor firm, Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co, which started operations in 1917 and was for a long time the single largest law firm in the country, had an overseas presence.
